Spelling Homework Helpers
As a busy mom, I love spelling city. You can register for free with a valid email address, type in your child's spelling lists. This site will help them learn the words using audio files, you can download worksheets in print or cursive for writing practice and have them play games with their words. Did I say FREE?
For my eleven year old, whose cursive needs work, the writing worksheets have helped his penmanship. We also created word parts cards that have prefix, root and suffix based on his lists. Using an online etymology dictionary I go thru his list and break it down. No wonder why spelling is such a challenge!
We take the cards and I also use them to quiz him. I'll spread out the cards used for his current list, separated by prefix, root and suffix then he re-creates his words. When he gets stuck, I'll give him hints like "this word means under water (submarine)." Other words more tricky - like subpeona requires some explaining and analogies. He's getting it!
